My name is Kris. I’m a freelance writer from Cape Town, South Africa, with a focus on African literature, speculative fiction, and storytelling.
I have a Master of Arts degree, specialising in Creative Writing, from the University of Cape Town. My writings have appeared in publications like Wasafiri, Brittle Paper, and The Johannesburg Review of Books.
My professional writing extends beyond literature to ghostwriting thought leadership pieces, SEO content writing, and freelance opinion essays on South African culture and politics.
What You’ll Find Here
The portfolio links to my work as a Cape Town book reviewer across various journals and magazines. Most of my literary criticism focuses on African literature because that’s where my interests and qualifications happen to overlap.
My perspective comes from living in the Global South, and I’m particularly interested in how African writers are reshaping speculative fiction and genre writing.
The blog section includes book reviews of South African authors, essays on African speculative fiction, movie reviews, and the occasional short story.
I usually write about South African books and films, but I also cover broader topics in African literature. When I feel like it, I write about horror movies that I find funny or scary or interesting. They’re usually American.
Professional Work
While this is primarily my portfolio of African literature criticism, I also take on freelance projects.
This includes ghostwriting for pan-African advocacy organisations and nonprofits working in African contexts, professional book reviews for publishers, and writing on culture and politics.
See my Work With Me page for more about my freelance writing services, as well as what I offer as a Cape Town-based SEO consultant and content writer.

I’m always up for discussing projects, and I’ll almost always say yes to free books or a good cause in need of a professional writer.
